Leadership Summit-Bill Hybels

Summit Session 1: Life cycle of a leader…

Bill Hybels
Rom 12:8—Gift of leadership—develop diligently

Product Life Cycle:
8-track, Cassette, CD, iPod

Pet Rocks—Sold a million—one year

The Curve:
Bill Gates-Foundation—Influence life cycle continues to leap
Invest in winners

American Politician-Jimmy Carter

King Solomon: Effectiveness climbed and then dropped when he became foolish.

Leaders hit certain point and get drawn away from God and his plan. Heart drawn away.

What should a Christian leaders chart look like. Can our influence continue long into our career…

The earlier you begin leading the more seasoned you will be come.

What do you really have to offer people when you are young?

Are you honed and sharpened?

Important lessons are learned early in life…

Passion for God is enough—in your twenties.

David—Pure Passion, no brains

The reason for the Passion: God stirring—God looking for some young kingdom fool to be passionate for him. God will honor and help you to mature you. Stay wild—don’t settle down prematurely.

Leaders cannot live on passion alone…Followers can live on dreams alone.
Am I a part of the machinery or a part of the family.

Add something to the fired up heart—Support, under gird

Heart
Add Skill—Pay the Price to Develop

How do you develop skills?
• Read everything you can on leadership
• Hang out with other leaders and ask questions
• Go to seminars about leadership
• Keep leading something—or you will loose your edge

Leadership Development
• Character
• Competence
• Chemistry

4 Statement Grid for Constellation of Colleagues:
1. Intelligence—Smart people matter
2. Energetic—energized enough to energize others
3. Relational IQ – Get stuff done and hurt people while doing it. Supreme value of love
4. Win or die spirit – People who feel calling on life and would rather be beaten or killed.

Pastors unwilling to take to next level because of fear…
People who do not get beyond LD will eventually leave
Solution—Re-architect leadership structure

People leave not because they are power hungry but because they are impact hungry.
Power hungry or impact hungry?

Don’t become the limiting factor…Surround yourself

Succession:
Pastor stays to point of ineffectiveness
Move you out—

Alternative Plan:
Continue to make a contribution

Leadership Life Cycle:

Final Stage: God is responsible for—Special Anointing—Statements anointing of regional walls....outside the 4 walls of your church.

If God would have his way in your life and mine—our life cycle would continue to climb and have maximum influence.

Breaks heavens heart when we fall short of our leadership potential.

Bags of mealy meal: Stakes of Leadership—If you lead well, preach well, serve well—then people will live. If you don’t people will die!

There is no mistake why you are here at the summit—desperate time in history.
We have to step it up.
